Common Causes of Boating Accidents

Strength in Your Time of Need
|

Although boating is a fun recreational activity, especially during the spring and summer months, boating accidents commonly occur. Unfortunately, there are instances every year where people are seriously injured or even killed while boating.

Based on data by the U.S. Coast Guard, the following are some of the most common causes of boating accidents in the country:

  • Boating under the influence (BUI) – The leading cause of recreational boating accidents is impairment since many Americans enjoy spending time on boats to relax and consume an excessive amount of alcohol.

  • Operator error – Serious accidents are also caused by mistakes made while operating a vessel. Common operator errors include speeding, violating navigational rules, failure to check the weather prior to boating, or otherwise operating a boat in a careless or reckless manner.

  • Operator inattention – Operators must always stay vigilant and aware of their surroundings while boating. Other vessels, swimmers, rocks, weather conditions, and dangerous waters can all increase the risk of an accident.

  • Operator inexperience – Unlike cars, motorcycles, and other motor vehicles, most states do not require individuals to obtain a boating license in order to operate a vessel. Even if a license is mandatory, it can be easily acquired after taking a quick safety course. Inexperienced boaters do not have a clear understanding of boating law, navigation rules, and how to act when an emergency occurs.

  • Mechanical failure – Boat owners are responsible for ensuring their boats are in good condition through routine inspections and maintenance. If an owner fails to properly maintain his/her vessel and a mechanical failure cause an accident, he/she could be held liable for the accident and injuries. However, some malfunctions are caused by defective parts or vessels, which means that boat or part manufacturer would be at fault.
