On Dec. 9, 2014, icy roads across Connecticut caused treacherous driving conditions, then parts of the state were hit with heavy winds and rain. Winds were expected to reach up to 50 miles per hour in parts of the state and the National Weather Service issued coastal flooding warnings for Fairfield and New Haven counties.
By 9 a.m., state police received reports of approximately 120 accidents and AAA's roadside crew responded to nearly 430 calls in Greater Hartford and eastern Connecticut since midnight. A number of those calls originated from the Connecticut River Valley and along the I-84.
On Tuesday morning around 8:30 a.m., one such crash involved a bus that was driving on the I-91. The bus skidded and caused injuries to nine people during the morning commute. The bus wound up blocking traffic as it came to a standstill across two lanes of traffic and the carpool lane.
Ambulances from Aetna and The Ambulance service of Manchester arrived at the scene to assist Windsor Volunteer Ambulance at exit 38 A on I-91. According to Aetna-ASM, four patients were transported to Hartford Hospital initially, and later on five more were transported.
The same day, another bus crashed into a fence in New Britain around 7:15 a.m. in St. Ann's Church parking lot.
While bus accidents are far less common than standard car accidents, they can and do happen, especially when bad weather conditions or bus driver negligence are involved. Due to the fact that passengers are not usually wearing any type of seatbelt restraints, the chances of head injuries and fractures are significant.
